Time Management Tips for PTE Reading Sub-test

Most test takers find it hard to manage their time in the PTE Reading Sub-test. Since the Reading Section takes around 32–41 minutes and contains 15–20 independent and integrated skills question, most PTE examinees often stuck with challenging questions and spent too much time reading. As a test taker attending review classes in a PTE center, it is practical to look for simple tips and techniques that can help you manage your time in the reading test.

For test takers enrolled in JRooz PTE Review Center, read and follow these three simple tips on how to manage your time in the Pearson Test of English – Reading Sub-test:

1. Identify the proper length of each reading task. Below is a list of the reading tasks and their corresponding time frames and question items:

• Multiple choice, single answer task

– 2 question items
– 4 minutes

• Multiple choice, multiple answer task

– 2 question items
– 6 minutes

• Re-order paragraphs task

– 2 question items
– 8-17 minutes

• Fill in the blanks task

– 4 question items
– 6 minutes

• Reading & Writing: Fill in the blanks task

– 6 question items
– 9 minutes

2. Plan the activities that you are going to do before taking the Pearson Test of English – Reading Test. The following is a sample plan for each reading task:

• Multiple choice, single answer task – Spend two minutes answering each question. Read the question before you skim the text. Look for keywords in the text and analyze the four answer options. If you still can’t figure out the answer, use the process of elimination.

• Multiple choice, multiple answer task – Since this reading task requires you to select more than one answer option, evaluate each answer option to determine their main idea. Examine the question and quickly skim the text. Spend at least 3 minutes for each question in this reading task.

• Re-order paragraphs task – This reading task contains two question items and involves reordering five paragraphs. Spend four minutes skimming each text boxes and identifying their main idea. Focus on identifying the first paragraph as it guides you to the order of the rest of the paragraphs.

• Fill in the blanks task – In this reading task, you are asked to answer four questions in six minutes. Spend at least a minute and a half to answer each question by determining the overall gist of the question and looking for keywords in the text.

• Reading & Writing: Fill in the blanks task – This reading task consists of six questions with a list of answer choices. For students enrolled in a PTE center, spend one minute answering each question by looking for keywords in the questions and evaluating each answer options.

3. If you have an extra time, use it to review or change your answers in each reading task.
