How the PTE Academic Differs from the PTE General Exam
Pearson Language Tests, a part of the Pearson PLC group, offers many exams that establish the English proficiency level of non-native English users. Among them are the PTE Academic test and the PTE General test.
Here’s an overview of how the two PTE exams differ from each other.
The PTE Academic exam is designed for people who are planning to study abroad. The PTE General exam, on the other hand, is designed to assess an individual’s practical English communication skills.
When selecting an exam, you must first determine why you want to establish your English proficiency level. This way, you can make sure that your PTE preparation will not only train you for the test but for your life abroad as well.
The PTE Academic test is a computerized examination. It is divided into three parts: speaking and writing, reading and listening. The speaking and writing exams are taken together.
Overall, the PTE Academic exam has more than 20 test types. So, if you are planning to take it, it is best that you come up with strategies on how to tackle each test type during your PTE preparation. You can develop your own tactics or ask your PTE instructor for tips.
The PTE General exam, meanwhile, is divided into two parts: a written test and an interview. It has six levels: A1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Levels A1, 1, 2, and 3 are designed for people aged 12 and above. Levels 4 and 5 are designed for people aged 17 and above. The duration of the written exam and interview vary depending on the level taken.
Here’s an overview.

|Level 2||95 minutes||7 minutes|
|Level 3||120 minutes||7 minutes|
